In 2126, a DMMORPG (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) called YGGDRASIL was released, distinguishing itself from all other games of its kind for its unprecedented ability to interact with the game. After twelve years of intense activity, the game's servers will soon be shut down. A guild, Ainz Ooal Gown, once composed of 41 members, is considered one of the strongest in the game. Now, only four members remain; the other 37 have left the game, and only one character, an Elder Lich named Momonga, still plays as the guild leader, maintaining his headquarters, the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Minutes before closing, he invites the remaining guild members, but only one shows up, and only briefly before leaving. Although saddened, he accepts that his friends have other lives to care for and decides to remain logged in until the servers are shut down.

When closing time arrives, Momonga discovers that the game hasn't disappeared; instead, Nazarick has been transported to another reality, along with various NPCs who have gained sentience. Momonga is trapped in his in-game avatar, unable to use normal player functions like chat or even log out. Left with no other option, Momonga decides to find out if anyone from the real world has entered this new world with him. Adopting the guild name Ainz Ooal Gown as a message to the other players, Momonga begins exploring the world, trying to figure out what happened, searching for anyone or anything that might help him solve this mystery while ensuring the safety of Nazarick. Ainz Ooal Gown seems to change his behavior as a result of the game's mechanics, as he shows no moral qualms about killing and other actions that are taboo in the real world. This is a story about the psychology of a being that transcends ethical considerations, possessing nearly limitless power.
