Twelve years before the events of the series, a nine-tailed demon fox attacked the village of Konoha. The attack caused chaos and the deaths of many people. The Fourth Hokage took control of the situation and defeated the Nine-Tails (Japanese: 九尾 Kyūbi), sacrificing his own life and giving his soul to the God of Death to seal the demon within the newborn child, Naruto Uzumaki. The Fourth Hokage was hailed as a hero after sealing the Demon Fox.

A rule established by the Third Hokage forbade the villagers from speaking of that event to anyone. Naruto grew up alone, without friends or family. He sought recognition and attention the only way he knew how – through showing off and causing trouble.

The series follows the maturation and development of Naruto and his friends, emphasizing their interactions and the influence of their pasts on their personalities. Naruto befriends Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, two young ninja who, together with him, form a three-person team under the command of their experienced teacher, Kakashi Hatake.

The series' greatest mysteries revolve around questions about the identities and motivations of the characters. The story of Naruto's parents, the goals that drive Kabuto Yakushi's actions, and the identity of the mysterious leader of Akatsuki.
